Book of Dead Slot Review: Five Returns, One Ceiling

In short — our verdict: 7.0/10 — Book of Dead is a five-reel Play'n GO game shipped in five return settings rather than one, running from a 96.21% default down to 84.18%, and the casino picks which one you play.

You can play Book of Dead at five different return rates and never be told which one you got. That single fact shapes everything else on this page.

Book of Dead Strengths and Weaknesses

Pros: What Works Well

  • Pro: The golden tomb is the scatter and the wild at once, so three of them anywhere both pay and open the feature
  • Pro: Free spins re-triggered in both recorded sessions, taking ten spins to twenty each time
  • Pro: Every symbol value is printed on the paytable, and the figures match Play'n GO's own rules document line for line
  • Pro: The bet runs from 0.01 to 100.00, so the same game fits a one-cent spin and a hundred-unit one
  • Pro: Licensing is clean: the British register records nothing against account 55949, and Malta lists a full B2B authorisation rather than a recognition notice

Cons: What Holds It Back

  • Con: Five return configurations exist and nothing inside the game tells you which one your casino bought
  • Con: The studio's own volatility rating moved from very high in 2022 to high in 2026, four years apart, for the same game
  • Con: The expanding symbol is drawn at random, and the draw landed on the paytable's cheapest entry in both runs we recorded
  • Con: No laboratory publishes a certificate for this title, so the testing claim stays at company level
  • Con: The gamble round stops at 2,500 coins, one hundredth of the game's own ceiling
  • Con: Two thirds of the paid spins in our longer session returned nothing at all
First-hand test: We ran two recorded sessions in Play'n GO's own demo on 30 September, both at a fixed 1.00 bet, both on play money. The first lasted 46 paid spins and gave back 31.50 of the 46.00 staked. The second ran 204 paid spins and gave back 176.00 of 204.00. Each session triggered the feature exactly once. Each one re-triggered. The gap between them is the whole story of this game. The first feature paid 675 coins, worth 13.50 at that bet. The second paid 3,250 coins, worth 65.00. Same trigger, same expanding symbol, nearly five times the result. Two hundred and fifty spins measure nothing about a long-run return, and we won't pretend otherwise. What they show is shape. Sixty-six of the 204 paid spins in the longer run returned anything at all, and one event carried 37% of everything that came back. One more thing if you try this yourself: the free demo ends its own session after a while, and the client went on accepting our clicks for about 75 presses before it said so.

How Much a Book of Dead Spin Costs

A spin costs whatever three numbers multiply out to, and you set all three. The coin value runs from 0.01 to 2.00, you stake one to five coins on each line, and you switch on anywhere between one and ten lines. We walked every stepper to its stop in the demo, so the cheapest spin is a single cent and the dearest is 100.00.

Most players leave two of the three alone.

That matters more than it sounds, because the ceiling further down this page is fixed in coins rather than in money.

The Symbols and What They Pay

Rich Wilde pays most: 5,000 for five of him on a line, then 1,000 for four, 100 for three and 10 for two. The pharaoh mask follows at 2,000, Anubis and Horus sit together at 750, and the card symbols trail from 150 down to 100. Read the footer under the table before you convert any of it: those values multiply the bet on that line rather than your whole stake.

Rich Wilde tops the table at 5,000 a line for five. Read the footer with it: these values multiply the per-line bet, while scatters multiply the total. Source: our own screenshot.

The scatter works the other way round. It pays 200, 20 and 2 for five, four and three, and those three figures multiply the total bet instead.

One symbol does two jobs here. The golden tomb is scatter and wild at once, which is why you will never find a separate wild anywhere on these reels.

Return: Five Versions, One Default

The return is a version, not a number. Play'n GO's own Game Rules and Settings document lists five configurations for this title, 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%, and marks 96.21% as the default. The same document says in plain words that default settings can be changed by the operator, and that altering them alters the maximum wins too.

Italian licence holders prove the point between themselves. Eurobet publishes 94,25% for this game in its own game record, Betsson.it publishes 94,25% as well, and SNAI publishes 96,21% while warning its readers that versions with a lower return turn up at some casinos.

Inside the game you get less than that. The rules screen prints a return figure only when the deployment carries a jurisdiction code, and when it does, it always prints the default.

Where the Book of Dead Ceiling Sits

The ceiling is 250,000 coins, and the game prints it on the last line of its paytable. Nothing in the client mentions 5,000x.

The one place the game names a ceiling, and it names it in coins: 250,000. The familiar 5,000x is what that works out to at a full ten-line bet. Source: our own screenshot.

That multiplier is arithmetic rather than a published figure. Ten lines at five coins makes a 50-coin bet, and 250,000 divided by 50 is 5,000.

Play'n GO demonstrates the difference itself. Its German build strips the coin layer out, so the identical ceiling reads there as 25,000 times the total bet. Same game, same studio, two numbers, and the reason is the bet model rather than the maths.

The odds of reaching it are published as one in 2,669,286.

One Feature, and the Swing It Creates

Three scatters anywhere award ten free spins, and the feature is where almost all the money lives. Before the sequence starts, the game picks one ordinary symbol at random, and that symbol then expands to fill its whole reel for the rest of the run.

The ten symbol expanded across three reels of Book of Dead
This is the mechanic the whole game rests on. The 10 was drawn at random for the sequence, filled three reels, and paid 1,550 coins on the cheapest symbol in the table. Source: our own screenshot.

The catch is which symbol it picks. Both of our sessions drew the 10, the cheapest on the paytable.

Expanded symbols do not need to sit next to each other to pay, and inside free spins they pay with gaps allowed. The base game does no such thing.

Three more scatters during the feature add another ten spins, and that happened in both runs.

Play'n GO answers that twice and disagrees with itself. Its 2022 rules document rates the volatility 10 out of 10 and calls it very high. The 2026 edition of the same document, and the game record on the studio's own website, both say 7 and call it high.

Our two runs sit closer to the older label. One feature returned 13.5 times the bet and the next returned 65 times, off the same trigger and the same drawn symbol.

Some of this is checkable and some is not, and knowing which is which is worth more than any score. Play'n GO Malta holds UK account 55949 with zero regulatory actions recorded against it, plus a genuine Maltese licence numbered MGA/B2B/225/2012.

No laboratory publishes a certificate for this title. The studio names GLI, BMM and Quinel at company level, without a number, a date or a register anyone can search.

We do not recommend judging this game by a certificate, because no public register carries one for it. Read the licence entries instead, which take about a minute each.

Playing This Slot in Italy

Italy gets the least restricted of the seven regulated builds we compared. Under the Italian jurisdiction code the rules screen adds two lines and removes nothing: the return sentence, and a guarantee that every win accumulated in a round is paid out, scatter and feature wins included.

Britain loses autoplay, fast play and hyper spin. Spain loses the gamble round outright. Germany loses the coin model altogether.

What Italy does not have is a licensed studio. ADM licenses operators rather than game makers, so the number worth checking is your casino's concession, not Play'n GO's.

Our Book of Dead Verdict and Rating

Verdict: Book of Dead suits a player who wants one clear feature and doesn't mind waiting for it. The base game is thin by design, and the free spins carry nearly everything that happens. Skip it if you want a steady drip of small wins. Two thirds of the 204 paid spins in our longer session returned nothing. Wait for the feature or don't play it. And check which return your casino runs before you deposit rather than after, because the distance between the best and the worst configuration Play'n GO ships for this title is just over twelve percentage points, which is a bigger spread than most players assume exists at all. That one check takes a minute.

What Else Do Readers Ask?

Most of what readers ask about Book of Dead comes down to two numbers the game states oddly: a return that exists in five versions, and a ceiling printed in coins. The answers below come from the studio's own rules document and from our recorded demo runs.

Book of Dead in-game rules panel open over the reels
The whole rules panel runs to 5,361 characters and never prints a return-to-player figure. The word RTP appears once, in the sentence about the gamble. Source: our own screenshot.
Does Book of Dead have a fixed RTP?

No, Play'n GO ships five configurations, from 96.21% down to 84.18%, and each operator chooses which one its lobby runs.

What is the maximum win on Book of Dead?

The client states 250,000 coins, which works out to 5,000 times the total bet at the maximum ten-line, five-coin stake.

Is the scatter the same symbol as the wild?

Yes, the golden tomb does both jobs. It pays from anywhere on the reels and substitutes for every other symbol.

How many free spins does the feature award?

Ten, and three more scatters during the round add another ten. The standard build publishes no cap on re-triggers.

Can you buy the bonus round?

No, Play'n GO sells no buy-in for this title, and no game in its catalogue offers one at all.

Does the gamble round change the return?

No, the client states that the gamble feature will not impact the overall RTP. It stops at 2,500 coins.

How do we test a slot?

We play the developer's own demo, read the paytable against the studio's rules document, and walk the bet steppers to their stops.

Is Book of Dead legal to play in Italy?

Yes, at an ADM-licensed casino. The concession number sits in the operator's footer and in the regulator's public register.
